Is America Ready For A Tiny BMW? PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 22 July 2008 12:01

I wrote previously about Mercedes’ foray into the small car market. As strange as that may seem to many Americans, both Mercedes and BMW have long produced smaller and less costly models for the European market. Now, it appears that BMW is considering doing the same: introducing to the North American market a truly compact car, smaller than any BMW that has ever graced our highways and back streets. Is this a good move for the German automaker? Or, will it water down a prestigious brand name?

Part of any automaker’s marketing strategy is to convince you, the consumer, what their vehicle line is all about. Dodge would like you to believe that they sell sporty cars and rugged trucks; Scion touts their youth oriented vehicles; and both BMW and Mercedes, like Cadillac, sell luxury vehicles. Millions of dollars of advertising is spent per year to reinforce brand image which is supported by consumer surveys of that particular sentiment.

Speaking about Cadillac, in the early 1980s GM’s luxury brand briefly marketed a compact car – the Cimarron – that ultimately bombed, in part, because it strayed far from its big luxury car base. Sure, the car was little more than a rebadged and re-tweaked Chevrolet Cavalier, but it contradicted the entire Cadillac mystique. Even a slightly larger and much later model, the Catera, also failed as the car was perceived for what it really was: a remade Opel.

So, now the dilemma: will consumers accept the “1 Series” BMW’s planned entry or will it cause confusion and diminish the BMW name? As a backgrounder, the current 1 Series is expected to be overhauled in 2006. Right now the car is offered as a sport hatchback, but the hatchback isn’t likely to be imported due to America’s aversion to that particular body style. Thus a sedan version is being considered by BMW for production according to published reports.

I visited BMW’s U.K. site to examine the current Series 1 model. With the typical BMW fascia in place the Series 1 resembles a slightly stretched Volkswagen Golf mated to a compact BMW. The “1” comes equipped with either a 1.6L or 2.0L I4 gasoline engine, a gas 24V 3.0L V6, or a 2.0L four cylinder diesel that achieves a whopping 50 mpg fuel economy. Prices for the “1” start at just under $25,000

Equipment on the “1” is typical BMW with ABS and all the full luxury appointments. Clearly, the current “1” is not a stripped model as it features many of the amenities found on larger BMWs.

In my opinion BMW must tread carefully in bringing a car of this size to the American market. Forget the hatchback and just go with the sedan with either a wagon and or a coupe being a possibility. Unlike the basic Mercedes models, the “1” may just be able to pull it off for BMW and allow the German automaker to sell a tiny BMW successfully in the U.S. Alternatively, BMW just may want to consider launching a separate brand, to retain the BMW mystique in the American market.

Get Ready For A Compact BMW PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 27 April 2008 08:00
Over the years, the entire definition of what is considered a small, medium, or large car has been turned on its side. Some people measure a car"s entire length to determine size, others take into account its wheelbase, while still others give consideration to the vehicle"s interior room. No matter, BMW is planning to import a car to the U.S. that is truly smaller than any BMW that has ever graced American highways: the 1 Series is coming to America...can you say, "Tiny BMW?" Like Mercedes, the whole thought of a less than luxurious BMW running around is almost blasphemy. Please don"t think that this hasn"t been lost on Bavarian Motor Works as they study and restudy the issue and decide whether to go ahead with the planned introduction of the 1 Series. Long a producer of vehicles from compacts on up, BMW knows that the U.S. market is fickle and may reject the budget bimmer. Still, as the marketplace continues to adjust and consumer tastes change, the 1 Series is ripe for importing to the U.S. Here is why: - A compact BMW would be the "gateway" vehicle for BMW to introduce the make to new consumers. Get them in a small bimmer and they will be hooked for life. At least they can hope so! - Sell what we sell in Europe, in the U.S. Yes, for years BMW has been producing and selling small cars across the continent. The 1 Series is not new, but the proposed model slated for U.S. introduction will be a revamped model. Currently available as a hatchback, BMW knows about our distaste for hatchbacks and is looking at the first imported 1 Series being developed as a sedan. Look for the car to get an Inline 6 and, perhaps, an optional turbo diesel. Also look for the car to retail for about $25,000, much higher than cars in its class. Hey, we"re talking BMW here, not Nissan. - Expand the market. Yes, BMW is successful when it comes to luxury vehicles, but even the more mass produced "commoner" cars can help the automaker"s bottom line. The U.S. market is very profitable so why miss out on sales by holding back on the 1 Series? So, when will the 1 Series makes it debut? Probably not before summer 2007. If the model does arrive at that time, look for Mercedes to quickly respond and import its compact model, the B Series. Yes, German luxury is being redefined, but perhaps what American motorists are witnessing is German engineering beyond the typical luxury vehicles we are accustomed to driving. Sounds a bit like Volkswagen, doesn"t it?

BMW Announces Bluetooth Availability for the 2005 Model Year PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 09 April 2008 03:00

BlueTooth technology is now available for almost all 2005 BMW models providing a new standard of convenience for in-car hands-free calling. This is BMW"s second major in-car communication/entertainment initiative for the 2005 model year. Likewise, Sirius satellite radio as a factory-installed option can also be availed according to the carmaker.

With a compatible Bluetooth cell phone, drivers can place calls, answer calls and select numbers from the phonebook by simply using the multi-function steering wheel or dashboard controls. It provides wireless connection between select compatible cell phones and the vehicle for hands-free calling.

A compatible Bluetooth phone is required once and the owner must complete an initial pairing procedure in order to create a private wireless connection between phone and vehicle. All subsequent connections occur automatically. Up to four pairings may be held in memory. Shipped fully activated, Bluetooth equipped vehicles needs no further activation or installation.

BMW conducts a variety of compatibility test on all available Bluetooth phones on the market to ensure utmost customer satisfaction. It must be noted that not all available Bluetooth phones are compatible with BMW’s Bluetooth option. A complete list of all approved phones for every major cellular service provider will be available on all BMW centers.

Standard equipment on the 2005 5 and 6 Series models as well as the M3 Convertible and X5 4.8is, Bluetooth technology is included in all other vehicles equipped with BMW Assist or a Premium Package. It is not offered on the 7 Series, which comes standard with a fully integrated portable cell phone. Some early production 2005 model 3 Series cars are not equipped with Bluetooth. Consult a BMW center for specific availability.
