Selecting Your Tonneau Truck Cover PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 05 August 2008 01:00

You’ve seen them on pick up trucks everywhere: specially designed truck covers that are all the rage. In times past sporting a custom fitted cap over your truck’s bed was where it was the thing to do. Today, a truck tonneau cover is the way to go for many truck owners. The choices of covers are varied, the retailers who sell them are many. Selecting your tonneau truck cover isn’t rocket science but it pays to “go with what you know” when selecting yours. Let’s take a look at the different types of truck tonneau covers on the market.

The most popular selling trucks in the USA for nearly three straight decades are Ford’s “F” series line of full size pick up trucks. Selling twice as many trucks as the nearest car, which is the Toyota Camry, this sales level clearly shows us that pick up trucks remain an important and vital part of the automotive landscape. Indeed, trucks from Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and many other manufacturers have filled our roads. Unlike trucks in the past which exclusively emphasized their towing and hauling attributes, trucks of today incorporate a third factor, passenger comfort, in the mix. Still, if you ask mostly anyone exactly what they do with their truck bed you are likely to gain a variety of answers. Most truck beds are used expressly for hauling stuff and depending on what is being hauled that typically determines how the bed is protected and or covered.

I won’t get into two other products, bed liners and caps, as the focus of this article is on another popular product: tonneau covers. As with so many products the quality and durability varies widely depending on the type of tonneau cover selected and the material used to make the cover.

A snap-down cover is the least expensive of all tonneau covers, but you can have a hard time attaching it in place during cold weather. Imagine snow and ice settling into the snaps, frozen in place, as you try to attach your cover: it just isn’t going to happen without a copious amount of effort on your part. Who needs that? In addition, the material is subject to tearing meaning that your investment can be worthless in moments.

Alternately, a roll-up cover is so much easier to use and it fits better too. It is also more expensive! Still, the advantages of paying extra money for a roll up cover are many including: better materials are used, therefore you get a longer warranty; a roll up cover fits better, which means that everything in your truck bed is well protected; and a premium covers lasts longer and looks better.

Of course, the ultimate tonneau covers are those made from fiberglass, to give the cover a truly hard and durable shell. Much more resilient than all other types of tonneau covers, hard shell covers are also far and away the most expensive covers for your truck. However, as with everything in life you get what you pay for.

In the case of a hard shell tonneau cover you get a lot more too, including: a secure lock, overhanging sides, hinged at the front, hydraulic struts, automotive weather stripping, theft protection, and a water tight seal. Another advantage of hard shell tonneau covers is that many manufacturers produce them so that they can be painted to match your finish. Stick a spoiler on the back of your truck and it along with the shell will give you one hot looking truck!

When selecting a tonneau truck cover go with one that is made by a major and reputable manufacturer. Top brands include Extang, Truxedo, Lung, and Access. To get the best price shop online with a reputable online wholesaler.

Your truck can look its best and function superbly with a tonneau truck cover installed. Select one today and protect the goods you carry as well as the investment you made with the purchase of a pick up truck.

Weather and Car Cover Fundamentals PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 24 June 2008 11:01

Selecting a car cover for your truck, van, SUV, or passenger car is a matter of finding one that fits your car and going with that one, right? Well, there is a lot more to it than simply purchasing a car cover. Size does matter, but so do quality, durability, and price. Let’s examine some of the fundamentals in selecting a car cover for vehicle.

Car covers -- or weather covers as some prefer to call them -- have been successfully covering vehicles for several generations now thanks to the ingenious and persistent work of designers who properly measure each new model to make sure that every cover is custom fitted. One of the first companies to get started in the business was Covercraft, founded in 1965 in Southern California. Covercraft, like so many American success stories, was a two man operation that outfitted car covers for street rods, import makes including Porsche, and for the aftermarket supply network. The company boasts of having produced 55,000 styles of car covers for just about every make and model of vehicle on the road. There are other brands on the market; however Covercraft is dominant and favored by automobile wholesalers such as the Auto Parts Warehouse.

When selecting your car cover, you will learn that a manufacturer can make several different car covers for one model. Basic covers offer limited protection from such hazards as bird excrement and flying debris while premium car covers offer extensive protection from the following:

  • Harmful and penetrating solar rays.

  • Moisture, including rain, snow, sleet, hail, and ice.

  • Flying debris and/or small impacts to the vehicle’s body: dings, scratches.

  • Pollution, dirt, and dust.

  • Bird excrement, tree sap, etc.

The top of the line car covers typically come with mirror pockets to give your vehicle the best fit. Most car covers are generally made of 1, 2, 3, or 4 layers of durable polypropylene [a thermoplastic polymer that is highly resistant to acid and chemical solvents]; more layers mean better protection for your vehicle from the above mentioned hazards.

So, aren’t weather covers for people who park their vehicles outside, hence the name? No, garaged vehicles are also subject to pollution and dirt; if you are interested in keeping your car looking showroom new than a car cover makes perfect sense.

Prices can range from approximately $45 to just over $200 for a top of the line model. You can save money by purchasing from an online wholesaler who will obtain the car cover directly from the manufacturer, bypassing the middleman. Most car covers come with a warranty and should give your car years of protection for a small amount of money.

Truck Tonneau Covers: Cover up with your own unique style PDF Print E-mail
    Monday, 12 May 2008 11:01
The following are the top reasons that most customers purchase tonneau covers: * Organized storage for whatever you"re hauling in your truck bed, plus the bonus of keeping a lid on loose items * Coverage from potentially damaging weather conditions, like rain, snow and extreme sun * Complete coverage of your payload that keeps your cargo out of sight from potential theft * An immediate improvement in gas mileage with tight, aerodynamic materials covering your otherwise drag-prone open bed * Sleek looks that range from smooth leather grain patterns to ultra-custom color matched style Tonneau cover basics for storage You haul everything from hardware to the occasional load of groceries in the back of your truck. A tonneau cover helps keep a lid on all of it, shielding your cargo from the blowing winds of freeway driving and all kinds of pounding wet weather. It"s an easy way to make sure nothing disappears from your bed while you"re driving or parked. A guide to protecting your gear from the weather with a tonneau cover Even simple cover over your gear can help prevent weather damage. Tonneau covers, such as Extang tonneau covers, take protection a few steps further though, with some ingenious design features. For instance, most tonneau covers employ strategically-placed weather seals that channel water away from your cargo. And, many models use raised and arched support bows to encourage moisture runoff. While no bed cover is completely water-tight, most will do an outstanding job of keeping your gear high and dry in nasty weather. Security with a tonneau cover When your cargo is out of sight, it"s out of a would-be thief"s mind. Tonneau covers make the contents of your truck bed a mystery, giving you confidence that your belongings will be right where you left them. Beyond simple coverage, tonneau covers offer higher levels of security, depending on the model. Most hinged (lift-up) tonneau covers can be fully-secured using a locking tailgate. Hard top and retractable tonneaus generally have secure key locking systems that latch closed at the tailgate. Gas mileage with tonneau covers Open truck beds can be a huge drag on your gas mileage. As air flows over the aerodynamic front end of your vehicle, it can swirl into your bed and catch on your tailgate -- stealing several miles off your latest tank. Covering your truck bed with a tight tonneau cover -- even a soft model -- stops the tailgate drag. Air hits the taut surface of a hard or soft tonneau cover and continues past your vehicle with nothing to catch. And, it saves you mileage without crazy tailgate removal or potentially damaging open-gate driving. How much savings? A 5% improvement in fuel economy is the industry-wide accepted number, though up to 10% is possible. Your vehicle could see bigger or smaller effects. Still, the idea is simple: a tonneau cover will save gas and eventually pay for itself. Sleek and smooth tonneau looks A smooth tonneau cover adds custom truck style to bland uncovered truck beds. Each tonneau cover we offer sports a custom fit to the dimensions of your specific year, make and model. The result is a special fit and exact appearance that was made for your truck. Tonneau covers can add any level of extra smart appearance to your truck. Soft tonneau covers stretch tight, not just for improved mileage but also for style. With a variety of lid materials, retractable tonneau covers are the kings of the low-profile smooth factor. Hard top tonneau covers are the ultimate in custom looks: molded-over edges, seamless fitting and optional paint matching. Many manufacturers offer different models of tonneau covers and all can improve your vehicle"s look and performance as mentioned in this article.
